Channing Tatum doing 3rd MAGIC MIKE movie at HBOMAX
HAWKEYE tracks far behind LOKI viewership / Adam McKay gets candid on Will Ferrell split / VICE eyes profitable 2022
Mornin! This is Sean McNulty and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on TUESDAY November 30, 2021.
Where ADELE’s “30” sold 839k album “equivalents” in its first week. That’s over 200k more than DRAKE did earlier this year, and probably needless to say it’s now the biggest of 2021. Although… just a bit below her 3.3 Million opening week for “25” back in 2015. #DifferentTimes
The 839k includes 693k actual full album sales (the rest involves a math equation around song streams that… even I’m not gonna nerd out on):
378k CD’s
205k digital albums
108k vinyl albums
and… 2,000 cassettes!! stay strong fellow tape deck enthusiasts 💪
AND: Here are the GOTHAM AWARDS winners from last night.
ALSO: As you likely heard Jack Dorsey is no longer CEO of TWITTER. He will leave the company entirely around May when he leaves the board as well. Their Chief Technology Officer Parag Agrawal is now the new CEO. No word if he gets to keep his @Jack handle in the departure agreement.
Dorsey of course already has another CEO job at small business payment processing company SQUARE. A company with almost 3X the market value of TWITTER and 100% fewer congressional hearings.
📽 THE SILVER SCREEN
“Magic Mike” is going for the trilogy at HBOMAX with Channing Tatum and Soderbergh
Tatum’s writing/producing partner Reid Carolyn wrote the script for this 3rd film, appropriately called “Magic Mike’s Last Dance”. The first 2 movies made about $300 Million combined globally. No word on plot or timeline but given Soderbergh is directing… it’ll probably be half shot by the end of this weekend. /Deadline
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II drops out of next “Mad Max” movie, “Furiosa”
Tom Burke (played Orson Wells in“Mank”) is taking his place - Yahya reportedly had a scheduling issue causing him to leave the project. /Deadline
ALSO IN MOVIES
“Spider-Man” producer Amy Pascal says series will go on for another 3 movies at SONY, with Tom Holland reprising the role for at least the next movie… but no official deals are done and SONY had no comment. No specifics beyond that. /Deadline
Jason Reitman sets up a production home at SONY with his writing & production partner Gil Kenan. No duration or next projects indicated. /THR
FOCUS FEATURES hires Stephanie Phillips as new EVP of Publicity. She comes over from WB Pics and will report into FOCUS Vice Chairman Jason Cassidy. She's replacing Dani Weinstein who is leaving the company. /Variety
📺 THE TV SET
NETFLIX sets new series from Kurt Sutter (“Sons of Anarchy”)
A Western called “The Abandons”, but seems to be in pretty early stages/not many other details.
He has his film directorial debut (also at NETFLIX) up first, called “The Beast” - about a trapper’s battle with an elusive beast ravaging an English village in the 1700s. /Deadline
“Hawkeye” premiere weekend about 40% lower than “Loki” on connected TV’s in the US according to SAMBA TV
1.5 Million watched ep 1 in the US, and 1.3 Million decided to hit play into episode 2.
Does not include mobile views, and is based on SAMBA’s 3+ Million sample of households which has proven pretty accurate in the past. /Deadline
ABC sets “Facts of Life” cast for “Live in front of a Studio Audience” next week
Jennifer Aniston as “Blair”
Gabrielle Union as “Tootie”
Kathryn Hahn as “Jo”
Allison Tolman as “Natalie”
Ann Dowd already set as “Mrs Garrett” in both “Facts” and “Diff’rent Strokes”. Airs on ABC a week from today. /Deadline
NBC sets Miley Cyrus and Pete Davidson to do their NYE show
Lorne Michaels is exec producing, will originate from Miami and also stream on PEACOCK… thus ending Carson Daly’s run of hosting the festivities since 2004. /Variety
So your Dec 31 options are:
Miley & Pete (& Kim?) on NBC from Miami
Seacrest on ABC from NYC
Joel McHale & Ken Jeong on FOX
And a CBS’s 5 hour Country Music hootenanny from Nashville
ALSO IN TV
USA / SYFY renew “Chucky” for a Season 2. Season 1 will hit PEACOCK on Weds. /THR
💻 THE MEDIA BIZ
Just a quick VICE check-in
A rare Q&A chat with Shane Smith from VICE, who is apparently still quite active at the company, just focusing entirely on Ad Sales. /BusinessInsider (subscription)
Current VICE CEO Nancy Dubuc says the company is planning to be profitable for the entire 2022 year ahead. /Insider

A slightly down day for most Media stocks but nothing big…
Except for ROBLOX of course, up another 5% ($129.36)
👩💻 NEW TO WATCH:
Nothing new to watch - but you can read Mel Brooks’s memoir “All About Me!” - here are options to buy on Amazon
OR - read Adam McKay’s candid VANITY FAIR profile - sharing how his split with producion partner Will Ferrell wasn’t handled well, and was related to McKay’s upcoming HBO show on the 80’s LAKERS where he dropped Ferrell from the cast… without telling him directly.
It seems Ferrell hasn’t talked to McKay since, despite several outreach attempts… including now in VANITY FAIR.
