BOND hits US Box Office expectations. ish. But far below last 3 films
Jake Gyllenhaal joins Guy Ritchie’s next pic / NFL Ratings at 6-year high / THAT 70S SHOW gets 90's NETFLIX reboot
Mornin! This is Sean McNulty and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on MONDAY October 11, 2021.
Where the GREEN BAY PACKERS missed 3 field goals in a 5 minute stretch at the end of regulation + OT against the BENGALS yesterday, but somehow still won the game. With a field goal.
Which probably should only help the NFL Week 5 TV ratings - NFL average game viewership is at 17.3 Million for the first 4 weeks, a 6 year high. Lotta good games - true. Although I keep hearing about this “online gambling” thing becoming popular… think that keeps people tuned in? Well maybe except for fellow GIANTS fans, as we lost our starting QB and star Running Back… in the same half .
ALSO: Here’s Timothée Chalamet as “Willy Wonka”, the College Years:
AND: Laurence Fishburne, Sam Rockwell and Daniel Criss will star in a 16 week BROADWAY revival of Mamet’s “American Buffalo” opening in April 2022, previews in March, directed by TONY-winner Neil Pepe (“Speed-the-Plow”).
📽 THE SILVER SCREEN
Jake Gyllenhaal joining Guy Ritchie for his next movie at MIRAMAX
Guy writing & directing, but not much known other than it’ll be a “Guy Ritchie movie” which at this point… kinda gives you a pretty good idea. And that it’s looking to shoot by year’s end.
No distributor as of yet - MGM and STX have been his go-to’s of late. /Deadline
Christopher Nolan sets Cillian Murphy to lead new UNIVERSAL pic, now called “Oppenheimer”
This is the WWII-Creation of the Atomic Bomb movie that UNIVERSAL recently won in a bidding war. Cillian playing J. Robert Oppenheimer.
Film also now has a July 21, 2023 release date - UNI agreed to at least a 100 Day / 14 Weekend theatrical window for the movie. /Variety
BOX OFFICE
“No Time to Die” : $56 Million ($313 Million global)
Close-ish to what was expected but nothing more, and not exactly MARVEL territory. Then again at a near 3 hour running time… it’s $$ potential was a bit limited.
Lower than the last 3 Bond movies by at least a good $10 Million, but was around recent “Mission Impossible” movies territory.
Considering the demo, more eyes are probably on the weekends ahead - Just 39% of the audience was the 18-34 crowd, and only has “The Last Duel” to contend with for the 34+ demo next weekend.
“Venom: Let there Be Carnage” : $32 Million ($142 Million US, $185 Million global)
A not surprising 65% drop from opening weekend given the first “Venom” movie had a similar drop without Bond competition, but the sequel’s US box office total is slightly ahead of the first movie so far.
“The Addams Family 2” : $10 Million ($31 Million US) also avail for $20 PVOD home rental
“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” : $4.2 Million ($212 Million US)
“The Many Saints of Newark” : $1.5 Million ($7.4 Million US)
OF NOTE: “Candyman” crossed $60 Million
INTERNATIONALLY:
“Dune” made another $9 Million, hits $118 Million as it awaits its US, CHINA and JAPAN openings.
That Chinese-propaganda KOREAN WAR film “The Battle at Changjin” is now at $638 Million after 2 weeks.

📺 THE TV SET
NETFLIX orders “That 90’s Show” spinoff series
A show that… frankly we all should have seen coming no? Plot is Eric & Donna’s daughter spends the summer with her grandparents in Wisconsin in 1995. Kitty & Red are returning as series regulars, but no word on other cast (thinking it’ll be more of an episodic cameo thing. Well maybe minus one person 😳). 10 episode order.
“That 70’s Show” creators Bonnie & Terry Turner are on-board as Exec Producers here, but longtime “70’s Show” writer/producer Gregg Mettler will handle showrunning duties.
And Millenials - yes that wince you felt was totally natural. Sincerely, GenX. /THR
For the record FOX already gave “That 80’s Show” a shot for 13 episodes in 2002 which #funfact starred Glenn Howerton pre-“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”.
NETFLIX’s “Clickbait” is the most streamed show in the US NIELSEN chart for the 2nd week in a row
Again, it’s according to NIELSEN (🤷♂️) and their streaming chart is released with a 4-week lag time so this list relates to the 2nd week of September.
And this is still before anyone knew wtf a “Squid Game” was, but clearly a lotta people were watching “Clickbait” before and after Labor Day.
Although apparently none of them were in the media business… who seemingly have not written one piece on this show, its popularity or basically anything about it outside of a few customary reviews in late Aug when it came out. /Deadline
Thursday night TV Ratings
FOX’s Thursday Night Football premiered with just under 15 Million viewers, + another 3 million on NFL NETWORK. That 18 Million total is on par with typical NBC Sunday Night Football #s.
CBS’s “Ghosts” premiered with 5.5 Million viewers, +700k viewers from its lead-in“United States of Al” (4.8 Million), which was a big drop from “Young Sheldon”’s 7.1 Million.
Or another POV - “Ghosts” had about the same audience as CBS’s Monday night comedies. /TV RatingsGuide

HBOMAX orders 2 unscripted series:
A Brené Brown 8-episode series called “Atlas of the Heart” - “An interactive journey through the range of emotions and experiences that define what it means to be human”. Now shooting in Texas where hopefully they have a far better idea as to exactly wtf this is supposed to be 🤷♂️.
“My Mom, Your Dad” - A single parents dating show where college-age kids set up their mom or dad. From Greg Daniels (“The Office” and too many hit comedies to list) and his daughter Haley. Yvonne Orji (“Insecure”) will host. /THR
