Anime pic shocks Box Office; CODA’s big Award wins weekend
TRUE DETECTIVE looks at 4th iteration / LIONSGATE invests in 2nd mgmt firm / DISNEY CEO rift blow by blow
Mornin! This is Sean McNulty and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on MONDAY March 21, 2022.
Where APPLE TV+’s “CODA” appears to have moved into the frontrunner slot for Best Picture once again, winning the PGA Award on Saturday night - Plus getting the WGA nod for Adapted Screenplay last night (although of note: “The Power of the Dog” was not eligible).
But this certainly puts a very feasible OSCARS scenario in play of Picture and Writing awards for APPLE’s “Coda”, and Directing for NETFLIX’s “The Power of the Dog” this Sunday.
(note: “Coda” director Sian Heder is not nominated for Best Director, but “Power of the Dog” is nominated in the Adapted Screenplay at the OSCARS)
ALSO: Other PGA winners included the usual suspects “Succession”, “Ted Lasso” and “Mare of Easttown” for the TV awards, and “Encanto” and “Summer of Soul” for Animated and Docu.
PLUS: Other WGA winners included “Don’t Look Up” for Original Screenplay, and usual HBO suspects “Succession”, “Mare of Easttown” and “Hacks” plus NETFLIX’s “Maid” in TV. And ASC’s Cinematography award went to “Dune”, all winners in the link. 🏆
AND: YE has been removed from the GRAMMYS performing lineup on April 3 due to his “concerning online behavior” of late.
📽 THE SILVER SCREEN
BOX OFFICE
“The Batman” : $37 Million ($300 Million US, $598 Million Global)
Still just a modest 45% drop, impressive for a pic of this size.
While not “Spider-Man” numbers, very well ahead of “Shang-Chi” and the“Venom” sequel at the 3 weekend mark.
CHINA was kind of a bust #thanksCovid: $12 Million, as 43% of theaters are currently closed in the country. Total take not expected to cross $30 Million.
“Jujutsu Kaisen 0” : $17.7 Million US
This is an Anime pic that…seemingly came outta nowhere, tho it’s fair to say I’m not very active in the Anime community.
From SONY’s CRUNCHYROLL division.
In the ballpark of last Spring’s Japan’s anime sensation “Demon Slayer: Mugen Train” ($21 Mil opening US).
“Uncharted” : $8 Million ($126 Million US, $337 Million Global)
Extremely low 13% drop from last weekend as the movie continues to show great legs. Not even gonna make a Tom Holland comment there 🦵.
“X” : $4.4 Million US
This A24 horror pic was in 2900 theaters ($1500 a screen).
75% of the audience was 18-34, heavily in the Southwest.
“Dog” : $4 Million ($54 Million US)
Another modest 21% drop, esp considering it’s been on PVOD since last weekend 🐾.
ELSEWHERE AT THE BOX OFFICE
“The Outfit” did $1.5 Million in 1300 theaters ($1150 a theater)
“Umma” did $900k in 805 theaters ($1118 a theater)
“Spider-Man: No Way Home” has a very good shot at cracking $800 Million US by next weekend
